Steamboat Rock

We left for Steamboat Rock State Park on a Friday and rain was in the forecast for the next few days. It was raining hard when we left, but as soon as we crossed over the cascades into Eastern Washington it was dry and it stayed that way for the rest of the trip.

Steamboat Rock State Park in Eastern Washington is located on Banks Lake and is almost completely surrounded by water. It’s a beautiful park with full hook-ups.  We were pleasantly surprised by how beautiful it was. We felt like we were camping at a mini Grand Canyon.

We were joined by MIke and Tina who have a 28 foot Cougar trailer. Karen used to work with Tina at the dentist office. Mike and Tina have three dogs, Jeorgia, a black lab, Joey a 14 year-old mix, and Jinger a 12 year-old Dachshund. We booked the campground on short notice, just a couple of weeks before and we were surprised to find two campsites available right next to each other.

The weather turned out great, 70° and sunny most of the time we were there. Take that weather forecasters!

We woke up to the sound of turkeys gobbling almost every day. Wild turkeys would waltz through the campground at various times throughout the day.

After Sunday, almost everyone left and we felt like we had the campground all to ourselves.

While we were there, we:

  • Toured Grand Coulee Dam (and took some dam photos!)
  • Hiked 5 miles around the park, saw two snakes, one of them a big one, but no Rattlers! We also saw deer and some prairie dogs
  • Rode bikes through a fairly rugged and sometimes muddy trail system. At the outset we saw paw prints from a big cat so we were on high alert the whole time. But, we never saw one, thankfully.
  • Played aggravation, the board game, and Mexican train dominoes
  • Had a mini mixed pairs corn hole tournament, Karen and I hadn’t played much before and learned how to keep score and found it to be a lot of fun.
  • Ate some delicious meals
  • Drove back on Highway 2 and stopped in Leavenworth for lunch at a delicious burger place. It was great to enjoy the sun before crossing back over the Cascades into the clouds.

Our five days went fast and it was fun spending time with MIke and Tina.  We would love to visit Steamboat Rock again.
