Kalaloch Campground, Fall 2022
Ed and Betty invited us to join them for a trip to the coast, so we made our first trip to Kalaloch Campground and hope that it won't be the last. What a beautiful place!
We arrived on a Sunday and stayed until Friday. No reservations this time of year, first come, first served. So we felt fortunate to get sites close together. We had site #D38 which featured an old tree with two large "burls" overhanging our trailer, which we tried to ignore.
The weather forecasters promised us sunny weather all week. They got one day right! Our first day was sunny but the fog rolled in quickly about 6:30pm and within 15 minutes we were adding layers to help with the sudden chill. The balance of the week was mostly foggy or overcast. The sun struggled to break through and when it did, it was short-lived.
The campground is dry, no electrical, water or sewer hookups. With the lack of sun, our solar panels could not charge our batteries, so we used our generators. Our Champion 2500 was relatively quiet and worked flawlessly to keep our battery above 12.1 volts. Our propane kept the refrigerator cold and the furnace warm. We were very comfortable.
Cell service was marginal, one bar or less most of the time.
We were introduced to some of Ed and Betty's family and lifelong friends, namely: Pat & Connie, Louise, Tom & Ruth Ann (Ed's sister), and Dennis and his faithful dog Cooper.
While we were there, we:
- Took walks on the beach, including nearby Ruby Beach
- Enjoyed great conversation around the daily and nightly campfires
- Visited Betty's sister's property
- Went for a hike in the rain forest on the Kalaloch Creek Nature Trail
- Rode bikes through the campground
- Found a remote spot off of West Boundary Road for some target practice
- Saw the The Tree of Life in person for the first time
- Visited Kalaloch Lodge and cabins
- Watched a pair of Bald Eagles at the top of a nearby tree
Thank you Ed & Betty for introducing us to this wonderful place.
