Craters of the Moon National Park, Idaho
We stayed two nights at a KOA camp in Arco, ID, 20 miles east of the Craters of the Moon National Park. Arco's claim to fame, it was the first city in the world to be powered by atomic energy.
When we visited Craters of the Moon National Park, we found that the Visitor's Center was closed as was 2/3 of the park, for road repairs. We were able to take three hikes, one of them fairly steep.
The terrain was amazing. Black rocks, most of them very light weight, amazing formations that ranged from giant barnacles to tiny pebbles that crunched underfoot when you walked on them. Some areas looked like liquid waves must that solidified very quickly, retaining their wavy appearance.
It was nice to stop for two days in one place, a chance to gather ourselves, get a little work done, and enjoy some down time.
