Amarillo, TX
It was a pretty windy drive from Oklahoma to Texas. We stayed at a KOA camp in Amarillo. It was blowing about 40 mph when we arrived and really didn't let up much the whole time.
The campground was sandwiched between train tracks and the airport, but the wind was howling so much, you couldn't really hear them.
On the drive to Amarillo, I looked up the weather report for the next couple of days in the Texas panhandle and New Mexico. Thunderstorms, large hail and possible tornados were in the forecast. So, we decided to stay in Amarillo an extra day and let the stormy weather subside.
While in Amarillo we got a couple of chores done. The first thing was to wash the truck and trailer. They were filthy from being on the farm for two weeks. After we dropped off the trailer at the campground, I also got a much needed oil change at Jiffy Lube. They did a great job.
During our stay in Amarillo we saw a couple of fun attractions. The first was the Big Texan, where if you can eat a 72 ounce steak along with the side dishes in one hour, it's free. They have a couple of tables set up with these large digital timers above for those who want to try. The record is amazingly, 4 minutes and 18 seconds! That's not even enough time to cut your meat!
Karen and I ate there and no, we didn't attempt the 72 ouncer. Karen had the ribs with mashed potatoes and a side salad. I had the 10 oz prime rib with mashed potatoes and broccoli. The rolls that came with it were equally delicious.
The second was Palo Duro State Park, which they say is the 2nd largest canyon in the country next to the Grand Canyon. Although, I would have to say, Canyonlands near Moab in Colorado seemed larger. Still, it was impressive.
We enjoyed our stay in Amarillo.
